SHARJAH, UAE, January 19, 2026 – The Emirate of Sharjah has achieved a new global milestone by obtaining “Advanced Affiliate” membership within the World Health Organization’s Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, becoming the first Arab city to reach this status.
The achievement reflects the emirate’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of senior residents and creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all age groups. It also aligns with Sharjah’s vision of building a cohesive society that places human well-being at the centre of development.
Sharjah’s transition from basic to Advanced Affiliate membership recognizes the pioneering models it has developed in applying the WHO’s standards. As a result, Sharjah is now acknowledged as a reference point and an official source of expertise and consultation for countries developing age-friendly programmes.
The emirate has previously provided technical support and expertise to the Sultanate of Oman and the State of Kuwait. It has also exchanged experiences and best practices with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar, strengthening its position as a regional model for developing social policies that support senior citizens.
The Advanced Affiliate membership marks a new phase of institutional work to improve senior citizens’ quality of life and reinforce Sharjah and the UAE as global examples in age-friendly cities.
A Humanitarian Approach
“Obtaining a new status within the World Health Organisation reflects the Emirate’s humanitarian vision under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who prioritizes human welfare”, said Maryam Majid Al Shamsi, Director of Sharjah Social Services Department. “For decades, Sharjah implemented comprehensive initiatives to support senior citizens, enabling them to live with dignity and active participation. The membership will further enhance our role in sharing expertise and knowledge regionally and globally”, she said.
Distinguished Initiatives
“Sharjah joined the global network in 2016, which enabled it to develop integrated action plans and implement distinguished initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of senior citisens”, said Asma Al Khudari, Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Office.
The new membership status represents a higher level of adherence to international standards and allows broader participation in global forums. It fosters greater exchange of expertise, enhances international recognition, and strengthens strategic partnerships with international organisations. Moreover, it enables increased support for other cities developing their age-friendly programmes and helps shape local policies in line with global best practices.
